What We Believe

The "Reformed" in our name refers to our adherence to the Biblical principles reasserted in the Protestant Reformation of the 16th and 17th centuries. Our spiritual heritage particularly comes from the Reformation in Scotland and the Scottish Covenanters. "Presbyterian" refers to our form of church government. Each congregation is under the oversight of a plurality of elders, who are also part of broader courts known as Presbyteries and Synod.

We are Christian

... which means that we believe and teach the following things...

THE TRIUNE BEING OF GOD

Here is both the knowability and transcendence of God. God has revealed Himself as one God in three Persons and three Persons in one God; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Thus, we have the knowledge of Him but also learn that He is more than we can fully comprehend.

JESUS THE PROMISED MESSIAH

Jesus of Nazareth is the promised Messiah of the Hebrew Scriptures. His coming and ministry were not what the people expected but exactly what the Scriptures foretold would happen. He came to be rejected by His own, betrayed and crucified according to God's gracious plan of salvation, all to make atonement (to bear and turn aside the wrath of God) for the sins of both Jew and Gentile alike.

JESUS THE ONLY SAVIOR

Jesus Christ was not just a wise teacher or an ancient prophet of God. He was and is the divine Saviour of the world, the only hope of all human beings. By this we hope not to offend, but we would be true to Christ, who said of Himself, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6). And God's Word also says of Christ, "There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heave given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12).

We are Evangelical

... which means that we uphold and proclaim the following things...

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST

"Gospel" means "good news." The Good News of Jesus Christ is all that He did to save us, including His birth, life, suffering and death, and His glorious resurrection.

THE VIRGIN BIRTH OF CHRIST

Mary, the mother of Jesus, was a virgin as she conceived and gave birth to Him. God by His Spirit was the Father of Jesus, not Joseph or any other man.

THE MIRACLES OF CHRIST

Jesus did real, supernatural miracles, healing the sick, casting out demons, walking on water, and even calming storms. By doing these miracles and rising again from the dead, He proved the truth of His claims to be the divine Son of God and source of eternal life.

THE BODILY RESURRECTION OF CHRIST

Having died on the cross, Jesus rose again in the same body in which He was born, lived and died.

THE FULL DIVINITY AND HUMANITY OF CHRIST

Christ is fully human and fully divine. He has now taken our flesh into heaven, where He serves as our Mediator between God and us.

THE SECOND COMING AND FINAL JUDGEMENT

Christ is coming again to make all things new and to judge the living and the dead. Are you ready?

We are Reformed

... which means that we find hope and joy in the following things...

THE GREAT REFORMATION

We believe that Martin Luther, John Calvin, and John Knox, among others, were men used by God in the 16th century to call the church back from error and corruption, in order to recover and proclaim once again the true Gospel of Jesus Christ.

JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH ALONE

The true Gospel recovered in the Reformation is the message that sinners are justified (i.e. counted righteous before God) by faith alone, in Christ alone, apart from any of their own works of obedience.

GOD IS SOVEREIGN IN SALVATION

The Gospel is the good news that God graciously works salvation in His people. More than just making salvation available to those who may be wise or good enough to receive it by faith, the work of Christ actually accomplished salvation for God's people. By God's Word and Spirit, the work of Christ is applied to sinners yet today, and the result of this ministry is new birth unto repentance, faith, and eternal life.

CHRIST RULES AS KING OVER ALL THINGS

Christ now rules as King of kings with all the authority in heaven and on earth. He is Lord of commerce and human government, science and technology, education and the arts. Confessing Him as King, we can live and work in this world with a great sense of purpose and with hope for a bright and eternal future.
